Chelsea winger Willian has said that he could stay beyond the length of his Blues deal with the Premier League season suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Brazilian’s current contract expires at the end of June but he seems prepared to stay for another month in order to complete the fixtures for the campaign.
Speaking to Esporte Interativo, he told: “My contract really ends I think in July. And if I had to play on those dates, in these months, I think it would be no problem for me to end the League in a way which would be loyal to the club, as they always were with me. Regardless of a signed paper. But it’s clear that this is not a certainty, we don’t know what can happen.”
The 31-year-old has been a regular under Frank Lampard during the course of the current campaign and he has contributed seven goals and six assists across all competitions. Despite this, he has not been able to find the breakthrough over a contract extension with the Blues as the board have been reluctant to meet his demands for a three-year deal.
As such, he appears more than likely to pursue a new challenge for next season and he could feature for a Premier League rival. Willian recently passed the British Citizenship test and he has publicly stated that London has become his second home. As such, both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been credited with an interest in signing him and it won’t come as a surprise, if he makes the move to north London ahead of next season.
Chelsea’s season may have been halted due to the health concerns because of the COVID-19 virus but they are still in a comfortable position to qualify for next season’s Champions League. They are presently fourth on the Premier League table with 48 points, three ahead of fifth-placed Manchester United.
