Pep Guardiola Performance with Bayern is a Failure

Bayern Munich’s time under Pep Guardiola for the last three years is being viewed as a failure since the club failed to win the Champions League trophy.

It is rather a surprise given that Bayern dominated the domestic competitions by winning the league title in record time. As Carlo Ancelotti prepares for his first game as the Bayern manager, it is highly likely that he will once again be judged on success in European competitions. This attitude may largely come as a result of the German league not being as competitive as the Spanish or the English domestic leagues.

Borussia Dortmund have been the only significant threat for Bayern’s title ambitions, but even they have not been at their best in the last few years. The situation is not expected to change for the upcoming 2016-17 season with Bayern already overwhelming favourites for the title. Thomas Müller, though, says that the season should not be defined by success in the Champions League.Müller was a winner of this prestigious trophy a few years ago. Since then, Bayern have come very close to winning the title only to fail at the last hurdle.Müller says that every season starts with the objective of winning every title on offer and this 2016-17 campaign is the same.

"The objectives are the same each year. We want to win everything there is to win, which is not to be confused with the impression that everything is nothing other than the treble. This is the small but distinct difference. The targets are large and well justified but - you know it well yourselves - everything is just not predictable. Even if you play well you can lose and vice versa. Pep Guardiola had also not the worst record. It is always the same on this subject - you need a good performance and a bit of luck,” said Müller.
