After Bayern Munich allowed Bastian Schweinsteiger to join Manchester United, it was thought to cement the position of Xabi Alonso in the first-team quite strongly.
However, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid star has surprisingly claimed that his future is extremely unclear right now. Alonso may be coming to the last few years of his career, but he had a huge role to play in Bayern Munich’s title winning campaign last season. In fact, he has been a key player for the German outfit since his £ 5 million move from Madrid. It is widely thought that his presence convinced Guardiola to allow Schweinsteiger the exit route.
The contract of Alonso expires in 12 months and there has been no talk about a new deal. Given that the player is 33 right now, the German outfit are unlikely to show any urgency in offering him a new contract. As a result, it has provided an uncertainty in this situation. Bayern Munich will move into a commanding position over the next six months. They will also look at potential alternatives to Alonso during this period. A much younger candidate in the centre of park will appeal to Guardiola, as he can build a team around the new signing.
"My contract? We will see what happens. This is not the time to discuss this subject.Basti has been very important to Bayern for the past 10 years. But he has made the decision to move on. That's his call and I can only wish him the best. We have a very complete squad. We have two players for each position," said Alonso about his own future, the exit of Schweinsteiger, and the need for new signings at the Allianz Arena. Last season, he made 36 appearances in all competitions and scored four goals.
