Bayern Munich defender David Alaba has acknowledged that he could pursue a fresh challenge away from the Bundesliga outfit in the future with Spain and England being suitable destinations for him. The Austria international has spent his entire career with the Bavarian giants and has racked nearly 350 appearances for the club across all competitions.
Speaking to SportBild, Alaba said that he is currently comfortable at the Munich giants where he has been the undisputed choice on the left side of the defence. However, he added that he does not see himself spending the rest of his career with the German champions, he told: “I can imagine trying something else, but I really feel very comfortable at Bayern. Every year there are new challenges and new objectives and the pressure will always be there. I’m happy in Munich. But of course, I can imagine seeing something else [in the future].”
Alaba has not faced much competition for the left-back role over the past few seasons but this could change next term, should the club pursue another recruit. According to reporters, the Bundesliga holders have already begun talks with the representatives of Lucas Hernandez over a summer move and there remains a good chance that the left-back would sign from Atletico Madrid.
In this case, “Alaba could face the added pressure to perform, although the Austrian has shown in the past that he is comfortable playing further up the field". Alaba has largely featured in Bayern’s defence over the past few years but things have been different with the national team, where he has generally featured “on the attack front".
Meanwhile, Bayern have revived their league campaign with a strong comeback under Niko Kovac and they are currently ahead of Borussia Dortmund at the top on goal difference. Bayern face Freiburg on the road following the international break.
