The 2014 Ballon d’Or was awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo a few days ago as the Portuguese star of Real Madrid was rewarded for all of his remarkable accomplishments which he made in the past 12 months. C.Ronaldo won his 3rdBallon d’Or award on a very convincing fashion after receiving more than the double the amount of votes that Messi and Neuer.
It’s hard to deny that C.Ronaldo is the best player in the world right now but Germany’s Joachim Low believes that there are other players which should also be taken into consideration for everything they have been doing in the past few years and that’s Phillip Lahm.
Phillip Lahm is the captain of Bayern Munich and Germany; he managed to play an important role not only for his club but also for his country as he lifted the 2014 World Cup title and also the Bundesliga trophy.
"Away from the Ballon d'Or there should be a player of the decade that Fifa should choose sometime soon. They should consider Philipp Lahm for this award. He has performed outstandingly in three World Cups - 2006, 2010 and 2014 - where he twice helped Germany to the semi-finals, then last summer he lifted the trophy. For me, he is the best player of the past decade." Joachim Low told reporters during the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich.
When it comes to winning individual awards such as the Ballon d’Or or any other one in the world of football there seems to be an injustice as it’s usually given to those players who are on the offensive department of a team while the defensive players often get overlooked.
Phillip Lahm is a player that performs superbly in just about every defensive position in the team, this truly is an outstanding feat to do and not only that but to also do it at the highest level possible is remarkable. The German player is reaching the last few years of his career and he has already stated that he wants to retire at Bayern Munich when his contract expires in 2018 and when that time comes it will be a sad day for the supporters of the German side as they will be watching a genuinely unique player which is going to be hard for Germany and Bayern Munich to find someone who can fill in his immense shoes.
